It\u2019s part of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/laws-lois.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/acts\/c-19.3\/fulltext.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">broader legislation<\/a>&nbsp;to decarbonize economy-wide by 2050, which follows guidelines from the Paris Climate Agreement. The Canada Electricity Advisory Council (CEAC), which is made up of 19 industry leaders from throughout the country,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/natural-resources.canada.ca\/our-natural-resources\/energy-sources-distribution\/electricity-infrastructure\/the-canada-electricity-advisory-council\/powering-canada-blueprint-for-success\/25863#a4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">provided analysis and recommendations<\/a>&nbsp;for reaching the goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report largely focuses on strategies to decarbonize the power sectors in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, and remote communities that rely heavily on fossil fuels, like natural gas. Approximately 80% of Canadians already live in provinces with more than 90% non-emitting power generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.power-grid.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Canada-emissions-map-1004x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-110826\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Canada\u2019s proposed effort to achieve net-zero power sector emissions by 2035 is possible despite \u201cformidable challenges, risks, and trade-offs\u201d according to the Canada Electricity Advisory Council. (Courtesy: CEAC)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the challenges, the authors wrote, is balancing decarbonization efforts with rapid load growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CEAC offered four recommendations to industry leaders and policymakers in order to achieve the net-zero goal: 1) rapidly expand clean electricity infrastructure and reform permitting rules; 2) ensure affordability; 3) maintain reliability, especially in areas dependent on fossil fuels; and 4) embrace Indigenous Nationas and communities as partners, since much of the new infrastructure will need to be built on their lands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transmission reform was identified as a key policy objective,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.power-grid.com\/td\/transmission\/fercs-watershed-transmission-rulings-are-here-heres-what-to-know-about-orders-1920-and-1977\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">much like it is in the U.S<\/a>. CAEC recommended that investment tax credits for clean energy projects be extended to intra-provincial transmission projects. Collaboration between provincial leaders on inter-regional transmission is also critical, they said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alberta, which generates the lowest share of emission-free electricity in Canada, used the CAEC report to slam the federal government\u2019s net-zero agenda, calling it a \u201cdangerous, costly and unrealistic path to failure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlberta is rapidly decarbonizing its grid, but we refuse to gamble with winter blackouts and crippling energy bills,\u201d Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Rebecca Schulz, the province\u2019s minister of environment and protected areas, wrote in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Originally published
